2022 VAU.R 308

The VAU.R 308 project aims to "highlight invisible aspects of the Escaut River" The Escaut, a 355 km European river, is an ecological treasure but is threatened by industrial zones and intensive agriculture that lead an environmental crisis. The significant presence of plastic waste in the water and on the shores has led to an exploration of how to collect and repurpose this waste, with the goal of confronting our role in the material cycle and our capacity to act as consumers and users. This is embodied in the creation of a sailboat made from recycled plastic, inspired by the Vaurien. Designed by Jean-Jacques Herbulot in 1951, the Vaurien was originally conceived to make sailing accessible to the working class, being built from leftover plywood after the war.
This study project at ESAD Valenciennes, located on the banks of the Escaut, resulted in a shared reflection between Léo Sprimont and Arthur Grethen: the design of a new dinghy that addresses current concerns about the life cycle, reuse, and recycling of our waste through design practice. The Vau.r308 seeks to critisize the creation and use of plastic material by highlighting the difficulty and opacity of its recycling process. It challenges our global consumption patterns on a local scale through a replicable process.

2022 Proximité(s) de l'objet - Proximitie(s) of the object

The aim of this study is to identify our relationship with the objects that surround us, with the goal of reclaiming them. From production and contemplation to use and transformation, this work seeks to define the values we (re)assign to the objects in our environment

With the aim of appropriating the object when it is used, I have chosen to structure this thesis to represent the craftsmanship and the unique object that results from it. To engage with the thesis, the reader must interact with it and mark the object from the very first intention to engage: they tear it apart.

I conclude my thesis with the quote by Richard Sennett, "To make is to think," and this production of objects holds this meaning for me. They have allowed me to breathe and continue into my research; they are my sketches and drafts.

Contreforms is a collection consisting of a coffee table, a small bench, and a vase, all designed to reuse the offcuts from each of the other pieces. The design of these three items minimizes waste while fitting within a standard half-panel of plywood. This project was created at the invitation of Fab City Grand Paris for an exhibition at Maison&Objet Paris 2023, repurposing the offcuts from the previous event.

Materials: Reuse of plywood from offcuts of previous editions of the fair."

2020 VICES STOOL & TABLE

Vices Stool originates from the reuse of wooden disks that were destined for disposal, sourced from an inventory of furniture from famous Parisian bistros. The legs adapt to their irregular diameter by tightening around it with the aid of a cord. Two reinforcements/guides keep the structure in position and prevent twisting.

Vices Table is strongly inspired by the stool to accommodate rectangular offcuts (more common than circular ones). In this design, the table also relies on the pressure of the legs against the tabletop and can be adapted to various tabletop sizes.
